New purchases - more debt
I just seem to be racking up the debt. Seriously.
So, last night, I had just finished watching some TV with my son and was settling down to work on my planner pages. I found that there is such a thing as self adhesive laminating pages that don't require heat. Score! Perfect for my monthly calendars. I want them to be a little more durable that what they are, especially the tabs. I'm not easy on my planner - I use it. I had a glass of mead that my brother had brewed. All of a sudden, I hear the doorbell.
Okay. Go downstairs and find a woman on my doorstep. She said that she is going around the neighborhood doing a free carpet cleaning. I don't have to pay a thing. Mind you, I had just gotten the new furniture on Friday and I had vacuumed, but I'm not going to turn down a free carpet cleaning. I say "Sure!" and let her in. She comes bringing in 2 boxes. Kirby is on the box. It is a door to door vacuum cleaner sales person.
She's going to tell me that my carpets are dirty. Which they are - I haven't had them shampooed in over a year. She proceeds to put together a brand new vacuum cleaner and has these little white filter disks, so that I know she's not trying to pass someone else's dirt off on me.
Now, I know Kirby. One of the best vacuums hands down that you can buy. My mom had one for years. It was big and clunky and you hated bringing it up the stairs. This had to be about 20 years ago. I've always wanted one.
The sales woman proceeds to vacuum my entire downstairs, using the little white filter disks to show how much she is pulling from the carpet. I mean, it was disgusting. And she was leaving them all over the floor, which frankly made my head spin. Then she went after the cat tree. Got rid of all the cat hair with one of the attachments. And then the old couch that I'm selling to a friend. I mean, wow.
Then she brings out the big guns. Apparently, this vacuum can turn into a carpet shampooer. Non toxic soap. The cats could walk on it. Mom's old vacuum couldn't do that.
Now, I've been struggling to find a good vacuum. With 2 cats and yarn and well, life, I needed a good one. The trouble is after a while, they wouldn't suck. And I've gone through 3 carpet shampooers since I bought the house. Not big heavy duty ones like this, but little spot cleaners for when the cats puke up food or hair. It's all part of having a cat. I had recently purchased a Shark, but I guess that wasn't picking up everything.
Then she shows me all the attachments. This is a house cleaning machine in 1 machine. Vacuum cleaner, carpet shampooer, hardwood floor cleaner. They have attachments to clean the window wells and window screens and duster and drapes and, well, it is amazing. I'm going to have to go through all the attachments and label them. Oh, and it has a paint sprayer and a balloon or air mattress inflater. It sucks, it blows, comes with a lifetime warranty. If it breaks, they will send someone to your house to fix it. There's an app to order more shampoo and bags. Oh yeah, it still has bags, but those bags are now made with the same material as what hospital masks are made from. So no more dust flying around when I empty the canister. Apparently the bag is supposed to last 6 months. We'll see about that. And because the bag is made from this material, it serves as an air filter. No air filters to rinse or change! Oh, and it has an air purifier attachment. So if my house stinks, I can just turn this bad boy on.
Yes, I bought it. On a payment plan, because we both know I have no money right now. I didn't think I would get approved for the payment plan, but apparently I did, and it will help build up my credit again. Supposedly. Again, we'll see. Now, they didn't want me to tell you how much I paid for it. Partly because they are way overpricing these. I went online after she had left and I saw that they retail for about $1200. I'm not sure what all comes with it. I am paying $1874.69 for this beauty. Plus interest.
Now, I could cancel this. I have until the 5th to cancel the order (she let me keep the vacuum she had opened). I have that option, and then they will turn around and sell it to the next person, I'm sure. But, she had given me a trade in on my Shark and took that away. So I would have to buy a new one.
I've already made the decision I'm going to keep it. If only for the fact that it is a full size carpet shampooer. I pay about $200 a year having a service come in and do it. And I have to catch the cats first and shut them in the bathroom. And that's only for the downstairs. If I wanted them to do the stairs or the upstairs, it's even more money. This way I can empty a room completely and shampoo it, then rearrange stuff. Guess what I'm doing when my son moves out?
How am I going to afford it on my already tight budget and pay down my debt instead of adding to it? Well, I'm going to take the money I'm getting from my stocks and keeping it. Well, paying off bills and putting the rest in savings. Same with the tax refunds. I was planning on paying off the furniture with the stock money, but I'll let that build up my credit too. So, I'm adding to my debt right now. But this way I won't struggle and I'll have a little in my savings. The faster I build up my savings to $5000, the faster I can really start paying off this debt. So, I will have some money to buy tulle for pot scrubbers and I can start building up my inventory for that. I'll have money to put away for my son's graduation party. I'll have the money I need to tile the bathrooms (at least one of them), and start making this house the way I want to. I'll have the money to pay a junk guy to come and pick up my old recliner and water softener instead of waiting on a friend to get back to me.
Yes, I will be spending money. Yes, I'm impatient to get to the life I want to live. But, the better I feel about myself and my home, the more motivation I will have to make some real money selling my stuff. Simple as that. I'll still be living lean. Saving money every chance I get. Maybe even start couponing again. But I have to get to that mindset. And frankly, I haven't been there. Not yet. Not completely. I just have to make it through this next week and a half until I can get my stock money. That will start the ball rolling on my journey.
Okay, so look for new totals in the next month for my debt. I'm sure it will be fun to watch!
