Introductions Are a Good Place to Start
Hi everyone in the blogverse! I don't know if anyone still reads blogs, but here goes nothing. If anything, this will be an online diary of my journey to keep me honest and moving forwards.
My name is Jen and I turned 41 in 2019. My son is a senior in high school and will be moving to live with his father far away from me. So, I will be an empty nester. What better time to improve my life?
I have not been good with money in the past. Straight out of high school, I got a credit card and thus started my downward spiral into debt. Oh, I enjoyed it. Just didn't enjoy trying to pay it off. Managed to make it through college without any student loans (I don't know how I did it) and joined the Army to get money to pay for law school. Never went to law school. Probably one of the best decisions of my life, honestly.
While I was in the Army, I got married and had a wonderful baby boy. Who is almost 18. Left the Army and started working as a paralegal at a law firm. Got divorced and moved back home to live with my mom for a few years. Worked for another law firm. And another until I was laid off. Started working at a bank and here I am.
I bought my townhouse a few years ago when my rent on a two bedroom started to be more than I could handle. I love my house. I love decorating it and rearranging my craft room.
On the plus side - my car is paid off. Yay me! The downside - my office is moving and my commute is doubling. And my poor car, while in good shape, is getting old. I will need to purchase a new car in the future, and I can't do that with my current debt load.
A few years ago I had tried going back to school - find a job that was more, well, me for lack of a better term. Didn't work out. I had no time for school with a child I was raising (I don't know how some people do it - I like my sleep and relaxation time). So, I now have student loans I am trying to pay off.
I have a couple credit cards and a couple store credit cards. And an unsecured loan. And medical bills. I am currently $18,470.95 in debt, not counting my mortgage. So this is me saying, enough all ready. I'm done with being in debt! I want to be able to pay my house off before I die. I want to be able to retire. At my current rate - never going to happen.
But I can change all that. I can change how I view money, how I make money, and how I spend my money. There is only me to answer to. I don't have a husband, my son is moving out soon and no other children other than the four-legged furry ones.
That's what this blog is about - it is about my journey to financial freedom. I can do it. I'm a very stubborn and determined woman.
To the right, you'll see a countdown of my debt. As I pay bills every 2 weeks, you'll see that number (hopefully) get smaller. I'll also provide posts of things I have done that have worked (or didn't) to make extra money.
More later!
